Sam Sam Group has made efforts to invest in collaborative research, application, and mastery of Ngoc Linh ginseng propagation technology using in-vitro NCM techniques.
The Value of Ngoc Linh Ginseng
Currently, the value of Ngoc Linh ginseng has been confirmed both domestically and internationally. It has truly become a national treasure. As such, its conservation and development have been specifically prioritized not only by Quang Nam province but also by the government.
According to Quang Nam Province’s Vice Chairman, Ho Quang Buu, the Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivated and harvested by Nam Tra My residents is one of only 5 locations worldwide with such precious ginseng.
Therefore, developing this ginseng as a primary commodity to boost economic development, contribute to poverty reduction, and stabilize the living conditions of ethnic communities in the ginseng cultivation area has been set as a key objective.
“One of the solutions to achieve this goal is to successfully build the Vietnamese ginseng brand. Along with conserving and developing the ginseng variety, we must establish production processes for high-economic-value medicinal products from Ngoc Linh ginseng raw materials to create a unique national pharmaceutical product, contributing to the pharmaceutical and socio-economic development of Quang Nam province and the country,” Mr. Ho Quang Buu emphasized.
According to Mr. Buu, the Government has approved a Conservation and Development Plan for Ngoc Linh Ginseng and recognized it as a national product, which has significantly increased the brand and value of the ginseng.
In Nam Tra My district, considered the “capital” of Ngoc Linh ginseng, the plant has now developed in 7 communes with thousands of households participating in cultivation. Quang Nam is also implementing various projects such as Ngoc Linh Ginseng Substrate Production Project, Tissue Culture Research Project, and Deep Processing Project for cosmetics and functional foods.
The goal is to have a conservation and development area of 665.4 hectares by 2020 in Nam Tra My district. By 2025, they plan to plant an additional 2,000 hectares, with subsequent years aimed at planting the entire planned area, making Ngoc Linh ginseng a key commodity for Quang Nam’s economic development.
According to Tran Van Man, Vice Chairman of Nam Tra My District People’s Committee, recent ginseng market prices range from 80 to 200 million VND per kilogram. On average, a 1-hectare ginseng plantation can generate 70-75 billion VND after 5 years. Thanks to this crop, many ethnic minority households have not only escaped poverty but have become prosperous.
Conservation and Development
Decision No. 157/QĐ-TTg signed by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 1, 2021, clearly stated: “Research and apply advanced technologies and achievements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into production and development of national products to increase productivity, quality, and competitiveness of national products in domestic and international markets. By 2030, form and develop at least 10 new national products.”
Therefore, in Quang Nam, to conserve and develop Ngoc Linh ginseng according to the aforementioned orientation, the region not only applies scientific methods in seed germination processes but also promotes the in-vitro tissue culture (NCM) technology for Ngoc Linh ginseng propagation. Sam Sam Group, located in Tam Thang Industrial Park, Tam Thang Commune, Tam Ky City, Quang Nam, is the leading organization for this initiative.
In an interview with Dai Doan Ket, Mr. Nguyen Duc Luc, Chairman of Sam Sam Group’s Board of Directors, shared the company’s efforts in researching, applying, and mastering Ngoc Linh ginseng propagation through in-vitro tissue culture (NCM) technology.
“We are the pioneering unit to receive the transfer of Ngoc Linh ginseng NCM in-vitro technology from the Department of Science and Technology. We have now mastered the ginseng propagation technology with the following stages: creating in-vitro samples from rhizomes (tubers) and ginseng leaves; creating callus – secondary embryos, forming seedlings; creating in-vitro seedlings with complete root systems. We have also invested in strengthening human resources and equipping standardized NCM laboratory systems and seedling training nurseries.”
According to Mr. Luc, the tissue culture technology team at the center was trained over 4 years, initially with 150 people. The process from tissue culture to plantation takes about 9 months. “We have a medicinal extraction system with a capacity of 1,500 embryos per batch. We have 20 rooms, each with 10,000 tissue culture ginseng plants. In the first phase, we successfully propagated 23,000 plants that meet the standards for nursery cultivation. Encouragingly, the growth and development rates are uniform, with a 70% survival rate after 5 months in the nursery. Mature plants have large tubers, normal leaf morphology, and a structure similar to ginseng in natural environments,” Mr. Luc said.
Mr. Luc added that beyond promoting research, collaboration, and scientific and technological transfer, Sam Sam Group is also actively training high-quality workforce, training verification, analysis, and research personnel specializing in NCM ginseng and ginseng-based products. Currently, many of the company’s product lines have established market positions, including products supporting diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, cardiovascular health, energy-boosting supplements, and male physiological improvement.
Previously, Dai Doan Ket reported that Quang Nam province decided to invest 3 billion VND in implementing the Ngoc Linh ginseng tissue culture model, entrusting Sam Sam Group with its execution. It is hoped that the in-vitro NCM method will make a significant contribution to the conservation and development of precious Ngoc Linh ginseng in the Tra Linh area of Quang Nam province.
